Weekly Photo Challenge: Split-Second Story

Picture of old Greek woman on the island of Rhodes.

The moment in time captured in this image may have been taken a few years ago on the Greek island of Rhodes, but it could just as well been taken decades earlier. The photo challenge this week calls for a story. Here is a woman at the end of a long life. Her feet have walked the narrow streets for years. Around one corner lies buildings unchanged for centuries, and around another awaits the masses of tourists hauled in by an incessant stream of cruise ships. What would a documentary of her life reveal? Did she fall in love? Work hard? Raise a family? Despite being on the other side of the world, our lives really are not so different.

  1. “I really shouldn’t have had that last ouzo,” Appollonia sighed. “What was I thinking putting on my best dress and going to the tavern for lunch…like I was a young woman…a modern woman! And now, he’s following me home. What would my children think!” Appollonia glanced over her shoulder to make sure he was still behind her. “He just got off that cruise ship and he’ll be gone tomorrow.” She smiled as she turned the corner. Her son and daughter lived far from here, in New York and they were always telling her to have some fun! She’d been widowed so many years that she’d forgotten the warmth of a man’s body as it lie next to her, between cool sheets. “Things are changing,” she thought. “So should I.” She opened the front door and left it ajar, then walked up the stairs.
